Lighthouse
Course: MEAM 1010
Date: February 2025
MEAM 1010 Introduction to Mechanical Design is a hands-on, project-based course that covers the fundamentals of the modern mechanical design process.
Overview
For this project, I was tasked with designing and fabricating a functional “light(house)” using laser-cut components, mechanical fasteners (no adhesives), and a simple LED circuit. I decided to take a creative approach by designing a dog-shaped lighthouse with an illuminated head and adjustable limbs and head.
Design Requirements Met:
-
Material Constraints: Used laser-cut MDF within the allotted 18"x24" sheet limit
-
Fastening Methods: Press-fit joints, Fastener lap joints, Fastener t-slot joints
-
Etching: Name etched onto a panel using vector engraving
-
Circuit Integration: Installed an LED circuit with a tilt switch so the light turns on when upright and off when inverted
-
Mechanical Adjustability: Limbs and head connected with pivot joints for multiple display positions
Assembly
The final design is both functional and lively, combining mechanical adjustability with a working lighthouse light feature. From this assignment I learned how to fasten parts without adhesives and create joints that move while also remaining stable.
