Catapult Siege Machine
Course: MEAM 1010
Date: February 2025
MEAM 1010 Introduction to Mechanical Design is a hands-on, project-based course that covers the fundamentals of the modern mechanical design process.

Overview
For this MEAM 1010 team project, we were tasked with designing and fabricating a siege machine capable of launching a bouncy ball projectile while meeting a set of strict constraints:
-
Fit within a 12" × 12" × 12" cube at the start of the competition
-
Include at least one 3D printed part
-
Use no tape or adhesives in construction
-
Remain on the floor at all times
-
Launch over a 6-inch wall
Design
Our team began with brainstorming sessions and hand sketches, exploring multiple projectile-launching concepts. We ultimately selected a catapult design for its potential to deliver a high launch rate, strong power, and consistent accuracy. The model was created in SOLIDWORKS as a fully functional assembly, enabling us to refine geometry, verify clearances, and plan the build sequence before fabrication began.
Fabrication
The catapult frame was produced using laser cutting and assembled from ¼” acrylic and ¼” MDF components, with wooden dowels providing structural reinforcement. The launching arm was powered by rubber bands, and a custom 3D printed part connected the arms to the projectile holder.
